Kayla Adams decided to become a sex therapist when she saw how many questions her friends about sex and how much shame negatively impacted so many people’s relationships. She grew up Jehovah’s Witness and her husband grew up Mormon so Kayla has a good understanding of sex-shame. In some cases, she has seen sex-shame show itself through painful sex.
Kayla grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and was always very aware that her blackness set her apart, and not in the best way. During college, Kayla enjoyed the attention she received from men, until she realized she was often being used as a fetish, or “another notch on the belt.” Through value work, Kayl began a healthy sexual relationship for herself by asking: What do I want? And why do I want it?
Kayla works as a sex therapist with Journey Wellness & Consulting Group, LLC. She describes sex therapy as a place to learn new skills. Just like you go to the doctor for regular check ups, the same is true with your sex therapy. We all come from a damaged sexual education system, she says. The more we can share our stories and seek help, the more normal sexy therapy and healthy sex education can be.
